ARG can meet all our client’s emission testing needs for routine compliance tests and/or specialized engineering projects.

ARG provides a variety of services that assists our clients in meeting their regulatory requirements or to provide informational data with engineering testing.  Our professional staff perform emissions testing using Environment Canada (EC), British Columbia Ministry of Environment (BCMOE), Alberta Environment (AE), Metro Vancouver (MV) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) approved and promulgated methods.


ARG senior staff have decades of experience in all industrial sectors, testing a wide variety of emission sources and control units such as Wet/Dry Scrubbers, ESPs, Baghouses, Cyclones, WESPs and RTOs.  Compliance determination or engineering projects can be required for:

Industrial Air Quality

Compliance Testing and Emissions Reduction

All industrial sources of emissions must be tested regularly to ensure they are meeting the terms of their operating permit from the regulating authority.  ARG is able to provide the required testing and also review the client’s operations to see what adjustments may be made to reduce their emissions and thereby facilitate expansion (if so desired), and also improve the client’s image with the public, as well as shareholders who may be interested in reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.


ARG currently conducts emission testing in British Columbia and Alberta.  Testing programs have been done for engineering studies, baseline studies and permit compliance.  Projects vary from tests for a single pollutant to a complex matrix of pollutants. 

Efficiency Testing & Energy Conservation

As climate change legislation is passed and energy conservation becomes increasingly important, ARG can assist clients with energy efficiency surveysand the accounting of all greenhouse gas emissions.  For example, ARG can provide efficiency surveys of boilers, natural gas combustion units and coal-fired units.  With this information in hand, ARG can then make recommendations to the client that will advance their energy efficiency requirements and fuel saving benefits.

Relative Accuracy Test Audit (RATA)

A RATA or Relative Accuracy Test Audit compares data from a facility Continuous Emissions Monitor (CEM) system to independent Reference Method data.  ARG provides RATA services for the following but not limited to:

  • NOX - SO2 - CO - THC/VOC - O2 - CO2 - Flow Rate


Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEM)

Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEM) utilizing approved instrumental methods for compliance testing, engineering studies and flue gas characterization.  ARG can provide CEM services for the following but not limited to:

  • NOX - SO2 - CO - THC/VOC - O2 - CO2 - Flow Rate

Vapour Recovery Unit Testing (VRU)

VRU is used to recover gasoline vapours displaced from tankers, trucks and barges as they are being filled.  Gasoline vapours are removed by carbon adsorption from the displaced air volume as it passes through a bed of activated carbon prior to discharging into the atmosphere. With the Dual Bed VRU design, one carbon bed is being used to remove gasoline vapours, while the other bed undergoes a regeneration cycle which allows the gasoline vapours to desorb from the carbon bed and be collected. The desorption process is achieved by evacuating the carbon bed. The total flow rate and concentration of hydrocarbons in the VRU vents is determined using hydrocarbon analysers connected to the inlet and the outlet of the VRU.


Using Vapour Recovery Unit Testing, ARG is able to determine the following:

  • Inlet and Outlet THC

  • Outlet Flow Rate

  • Inlet Outlet Pressure

  • Inlet Outlet Temperature

  • % Efficiency

Odour Evaluation

ARG can assist our clients in dealing with odour issues.  We can facilitate the testing of odours and the development of mitigation measures or work on a control solution. 

The ARG odour samples will be presented to an odour panel* for determining detection and recognition thresholds.  The Odour Study protocol requires the odour testing to be conducted within a nominal 24-hour time period after sample taking.  Determining the “odour concentration” (odour strength) shall be performed using an olfactometer. The odour study is guided by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) E679 “Standard Practice for Determination of Odour and Taste Thresholds by a Forced-Choice Ascending Concentration Series Method of Limits.”


Based on the results of the study, ARG will then work to develop an engineering-based solution or a process modification to alleviate the odours.

Ambient Air Quality Testing

ARG can be your ambient air monitoring provider.  The practises and procedures employed in stack sampling follow closely with the skills and techniques used in ambient air monitoring. 

Indoor Air Monitoring and Industrial Hygiene

Employing methods published byorganizations such as but not limited to theNational Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), ARG is able to investigate your indoor air quality issue.  The use of these sampling and detection methods quickly evaluatesthe indoor air in which a worker is exposure too and determines the levels to which they are being exposed. From this survey a mitigation plan can be developed and implemented to achieve the desired results.

ARG is versed in and ready to apply the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) to address the issues of (1) identifying, (2) evaluating, and (3) controlling Asbestos containing Materials (ACM).
