It establishes responsibilities between the facility and testing team, identifies the operating data required during the run, and confirms that access, ports, power, safety controls, and process conditions are suitable for the selected method. This preparation reduces field changes that can affect schedules, safety, or data usability.

Testing during normal operations may be more practical, yet it may not address a permit condition tied to a specific operating scenario. The appropriate approach depends on the regulatory requirement and the decision the data must support.

Treat calibration as a compliance control

Calibration is not an administrative detail. Gas analyzers, flow measurement devices, temperature instruments, and sampling equipment must perform within the tolerances required by the method and project scope. A clear calibration program helps facilities identify equipment issues before they affect a scheduled test or operational monitoring activity.

For facilities that own or rent stack sampling equipment, repair and calibration support can also reduce downtime. The practical goal is not simply to have equipment available. It is to have equipment that is verified, appropriate for the planned work, and supported by usable records.

Connect field results to regulatory action

Once testing is complete, the next question is usually operational: What does this mean for the facility? Results may inform an approval application, a federal or provincial report, a maintenance decision, an emissions inventory, or a review of operating practices. Technical data must be translated carefully without overstating what a single test can prove.
